Window Condensation: What It Means and What to Do

Condensation sends more homeowners looking for window quotes than almost any other symptom — and a good share of them don’t need new windows at all. Where the moisture sits tells you nearly everything. Water on the room side of the glass is a message about the air in your house. Fog sealed between the panes is a failed window. Dew on the outside is usually a compliment to your glass. Here’s how to read all three.

Three kinds of condensation, one important difference
Before you do anything else, put a finger on the wet glass and work out which surface is actually wet. It sounds obvious, people skip it, and it changes the entire diagnosis.
On the room side, where you can wipe it: warm, humid indoor air meeting cold glass. That’s a humidity issue, not a broken window.
Between the panes, where you can’t reach it: the insulated glass unit has lost its seal. That’s a failed window, and no amount of ventilation will clear it.
On the exterior surface, outdoors: the outer pane is running cooler than the outdoor dew point, which generally means the glass is doing its job of keeping your heat inside.

Condensation on the inside glass: your air is too humid
Glass is the coldest surface in most rooms, so indoor moisture shows up there first — the same way a glass of iced tea sweats in August. The window isn’t leaking. It’s reporting.
Older Pennsylvania houses hold a lot of moisture. Stone and block basements, crawl spaces with bare dirt floors, kitchens and bathrooms without working exhaust fans, firewood stacked indoors, a collection of houseplants, and unvented appliances all push indoor humidity up. So does ordinary life: showers, laundry, cooking, breathing.
One thing genuinely surprises people. New windows often produce more interior condensation than the drafty ones they replaced. Nothing is wrong. The old windows were leaking so much air that they dried the house out all winter, at considerable expense. Seal the house properly and the moisture you were always generating has to go somewhere — and it shows up on the coldest glass in the room.
What actually fixes interior condensation
Work down this list before you treat it as a window problem.
Run the exhaust fans. Bathroom fans during and after every shower, range hood while cooking. Confirm they vent outdoors and not into the attic.
Turn the humidifier down. Whole-house humidifiers are the most common cause of streaming windows in January. Winter indoor humidity somewhere around thirty to forty percent is the usual comfort target, and the colder it gets outside, the lower you want to run it.
Dry the basement or crawl space. A dehumidifier downstairs fixes upstairs window sweating more often than homeowners expect, and a vapor barrier over a dirt crawl space floor helps permanently.
Move the air. Leave blinds and heavy curtains open a little at night, and don’t block the heat register under a window. Dead air against cold glass is where condensation starts.
Then look for the exception: water pooling on one or two sills that were never wet before, while the rest of the house is fine, points to a seal or flashing failure rather than household humidity.
Fog between the panes: the seal is gone
A modern window is two or three panes sealed around a spacer with dry air or argon between them. When that seal fails, humid outdoor air gets in, the desiccant in the spacer eventually saturates, and moisture condenses inside the sandwich where you can never wipe it. Often you’ll also see a permanent haze or mineral film that stays after the fog burns off in the sun.
Two things follow. First, this is not repairable by drying, ventilation, or any product you can buy — the drill-and-vent defogging services advertised online can clear the view but don’t restore the insulating gas fill. Second, that window has stopped performing: you’re now heating a pane of glass with nothing working behind it.
One or two failed units in sound frames are worth replacing on their own, often just the glass or the sash. When they start failing in batches, the set is telling you its age.
Condensation on the outside glass: usually good news
On a cool morning after a mild, humid night — late spring and early fall around here — you may find dew on the outside of your windows, sometimes on some windows and not others. This alarms people who just spent money on new glass. It shouldn’t.
Exterior dew forms for the same reason it forms on your car and your lawn: the outer surface cooled below the outdoor dew point overnight. A high-performance window keeps indoor heat from warming its outer pane, so that pane gets cold enough for dew to form. Older, leakier windows bleed enough heat outward to keep the glass too warm for it.
It burns off with the sun and needs no action at all. Why some windows and not others usually comes down to shelter and sky exposure — an opening under a deep porch or a large tree behaves differently than a wall facing open sky.
When moisture is doing real damage
Condensation stops being a curiosity when water sits long enough to feed something. Watch for black spotting on the sash or in the caulk line, paint peeling off the interior sill, drywall or plaster staining below the window, a musty smell in the room, and wood at the sill corners that has gone soft. In humid Pennsylvania summers, mold gets going quickly on a damp sill.
If that’s what you’re seeing, sort out the humidity first, then have the windows and their flashing looked at. Persistent wetness in one or two openings while the rest of the house is fine is a leak — water coming in from outside rather than condensing from inside.

Why do my new windows have more condensation than my old ones?
Because the new ones are tighter. Drafty windows dry a house out all winter by constantly swapping indoor air for cold outdoor air, which is exactly what you paid to stop. Now the moisture your household already generates stays inside, and the coldest surface in the room shows it. Run exhaust fans, ease off the humidifier, and dry out the basement.
Can fog between the panes be fixed?
Not by drying it. The moisture is inside a sealed unit, so ventilation, dehumidifiers, and sunshine won’t clear it. The real options are replacing the glass unit, the sash, or the window. Defogging services that drill and vent the unit can improve the view, but they don’t restore the sealed gas fill that made the window insulate in the first place.
What indoor humidity level keeps windows from sweating?
Somewhere around thirty to forty percent in winter works for most homes, and lower when it’s very cold outside. An inexpensive hygrometer tells you where you actually are, which is worth knowing before you change anything. If you have a whole-house humidifier, its winter setting is the first dial to turn down.
Is condensation on the outside of my windows a problem?
No. It usually means the glass insulates well enough that its outer pane cools to the outdoor dew point overnight, the same way dew forms on a parked car. It burns off with the morning sun and needs no fix. If it never happened with your old windows, take it as a sign the new ones are working.
